Galleria Continua and ICI Venice – Istituto Culturale Internazionale present, concurrently with the International Art Exhibition of Venice Biennale 2017, a personal exhibition by the Cuban artist Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, UN CHINO DE PASO POR VENECIA, CAMINO A CUBA.

The artist immerses the visitor in a search that is a tribute to the memories of her great-grandfather, Chinese immigrant to Cuba in the nineteenth century.
Exchanges, immigration and migration have been at the center of every phases of the world’s history. Susana’s work highlights the little known contribution of China to Cuban society, in which social and cross- culture mixing are fundamental elements.

“The voices of my family members murmur in the background of the installation. The voices are recounting memories of my Chinese great-great-grandfather Arcadio Shang, who moved to Matanzas, Cuba. On long silk bands in the space is a poem I wrote in Chinese ink as a tribute to his memory and to those of Chinese migrants to Cuba in general.
The process of writing the poem for my great-great-grandfather, before, during and after the exhibition of the work, resembles the making of an ever-ending film – a continually on-going poem.
In the first presentation of the work at the former cinema Aguila de Oro (Golden Eagle) in Havana’s Chinatown, the dialogue between the reminiscences of the cinema and the reminiscences of the story of my great-great-grandfather were highly important for the work.
Fragments of history lost in the exhausted minds of my family members, who try to remember, mentally traveling back to their childhood and to places that only they know and which they are eager to share, trying to defy the nature of oblivion. Interwoven memories, absent words, present words… A story with innumerable twists and turns yet to be discovered.”
ICI Venice – Istituto Culturale Internazionale has already thrown light on this aspect of Cuban culture, in the exhibition Los Caminos de Café – Cuba in 2016. The meetings, talks and performances which will accompany exhibition offer opportunities to explore this social issue – which has resonances in Venice and the world today – together with the artist and university students.

“I have a strong interest in body, gender, race and social matters, and in transdisciplinary projects and processes of creation. My various concerns relate mostly to social issues, which I generally explore through art and non-artistic disciplines. I try to offer symbolic solutions or personal responses to these issues, combining art and other disciplines into various tools for this purpose.
A number of elements connect all my works. First and foremost is my concern to represent what is real and what is presumed to be real. The realities that are hidden by specific tools created by society to hinder knowledge of them. That is why generally the main objective of my work is to use art as a tool that proposes paths of access to the essence of reality. I also wish to emphasize my interest in the spectator as an active participant in my work.”

ICI Venice – Istituto Culturale Internazionale in collaborazione con Galleria Continua presentano, in contemporanea alla 57 Biennale d’Arte di Venezia 2017, la personale dell’artista cubana Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo UN CHINO DE PASO POR VENECIA, CAMINO A CUBA a cura de Laura Salas Redondo.
L’artista immerge il visitatore all’interno di una ricerca che è omaggio ai ricordi del suo antenato, immigrato cinese a Cuba nel XIX secolo.
Gli scambi, le immigrazioni e le migrazioni sono stati al centro di tutte le fasi della storia del mondo; il lavoro di Susana rende evidente il contributo, poco conosciuto, della Cina a Cuba, dove la mescolanza sociale, raziale e la trans-cultura sono elementi fondanti della società cubana.

“Le voci dei membri della mia famiglia sussurrano e fanno da sottofondo all’installazione. Raccontano memorie del mio trisavolo cinese Arcadio Shang, emigrato a Matanzas, Cuba. Lunghe fasce in tessuto di seta riportano poesie scritte a mano con inchiostro cinese da me stessa, come omaggio alla sua memoria e a quella dei migranti cinesi a Cuba in generale.
Le fasi di scrittura della poesia che ho scritto per il mio trisavolo prima, durante e dopo l’esposizione del lavoro, somigliano alla creazione di un film senza fine; una poesia perennemente in itinere.
Infatti, nella sua prima presentazione all’ex cinema Aguila de Oro a Chinatown – Avana – Cuba, le reminiscenze del cinema in dialogo con quelle della storia del mio trisavolo sono state fondamentali per il lavoro.
Viaggiando all’interno delle menti stanche dei membri della mia famiglia, attraverso frammenti di storia perduta, si è cercato di ricordare, ripercorrendo la loro infanzia attraverso luoghi che solo loro potevano conoscere e che erano desiderosi di condividere, sfidando così l’ineluttabilità dell’oblio.
Memorie che si intrecciano, parole presenti e assenti… Una storia che ha infiniti risvolti da scoprire.”
ICI Venice – Istituto Culturale Internazionale ha già fatto luce su questo aspetto della cultura cubana nel 2016 attraverso la mostra Los Caminos de Café – Cuba. Gli incontri, le conferenze e le performances che scandiranno lo svolgersi dell’esposizione, permetteranno di approfondire con l’artista e gli universitari questo elemento sociale che trova risonanza nell’attualità veneziana e mondiale.

«Ho un forte interesse per il corpo, il sesso, la razza e le questioni sociali, così come per i progetti e processi di creazione transdisciplinari. Le mie diverse preoccupazioni sono principalmente legate alle problematiche sociali che sono presenti nel mio lavoro attraverso l’arte e le discipline non artistiche; cercando di dare loro soluzioni simboliche o risposte personali.
Alcuni elementi collegano tutti i miei lavori. Prima di tutto la mia preoccupazione nel riuscire a rappresentare ciò che è reale e ciò che si suppone essere reale. Le realtà che sono nascoste da strumenti specifici creati dalla società al fine di bloccare la loro conoscenza; è per questo che in generale l’obiettivo principale del mio lavoro è quello di utilizzare l’arte come strumento che propone vie di accesso alla sua essenza. Voglio anche sottolineare il mio interesse per lo spettatore come partecipante attivo nel mio lavoro.»

Galleria Continua et ICI Venice présentent, au moment de la Biennale d’art contemporain de Venise, l’exposition personnelle de l’artiste cubaine Susana Pilar Delahante Matienzo, UN CHINO DE PASO POR VENECIA, CAMINO A CUBA.
L’artiste immerge le visiteur dans sa quête de souvenirs à propos de son arrière-arrière-grand-père immigrant chinois à cuba au XIXème siècle.
Les échanges, les immigrations, les migrations ont été de toutes les périodes de l’Histoire du monde. Cette installation met en avant cet apport méconnu de la Chine à Cuba où la mixité sociale et la trans-culture sont des éléments fondateurs de la société cubaine.

“Les voix des membres de ma famille chuchotent et font l’ambiance de l’installation. Elles racontent des souvenirs à propos de mon arrière-arrière-grand-père chinois, Arcadio Shang, qui a émigré à Matanzas, Cuba. De longues bandes de soierie disposées dans l’espace portent mes poèmes manuscrits à l’encre de chine, un hommage à sa mémoire et à celle des migrants chinois à Cuba en général.
Les phases d’écriture du poème que j’ai écrit pour mon arrière-arrière-grand-père avant, pendant et après cette exposition, ressemblent à la création d’un film sans fin; une poésie perpétuellement en cours.
De fait, lors de sa première présentation dans l’ancien cinéma Aguila de Oro dans le quartier chinois de La Havane – Cuba, les réminiscences du cinéma qui dialoguaient avec celles de l’histoire de mon arrière-arrière-grand-père ont joué un rôle dans la création.
Fragments d’histoires perdues, voyages dans l’esprit fatigué des membres de ma famille, qui essayent de se rappeler, retraçant leur enfance par des lieux qu’eux seulement connaissent et qu’ils étaient désireux de partager, remettant ainsi en cause le caractère inévitable de l’oubli.
Souvenirs entrecroisés, mots présents, mots absents … une histoire qui a de nombreuses distortions et dont des aspects reste à à découvrir.”
ICI Venice vous a déjà fait découvir cet aspect multi-culturel de la société cubaine en 2016 avec l’exposition Los Caminos de Café – Cuba. Les rencontres, les conférences, les performances qui rythmeront la durée de l’exposition permettront d’approfondir avec l’artiste et les universitaires cet élément sociétal qui trouve une résonance dans l’actualité de Venise et mondiale.

“J’ai un vif intérêt pour le corps, le genre, la « race » et les questions sociales, ainsi que pour les projets transdisciplinaires et les processus de création. Mes autres préoccupations sont principalement liées aux problèmes sociaux qui sont explorées à la fois dans mon travail artistique et des disciplines non-artistiques; où j’essaye de définir des solutions symboliques ou d’offrir des réponses personnelles.
Certains éléments connectent tout mes travails. Tout d’abord ma préocupation à être en mesure de représenter ce qui est réel et ce qui est censé être vrai. Les réalités qui sont cachées par des outils spécifiques créés par la société afin de bloquer leurs connaissances; Voilà pourquoi, en général l’objectif principal de mon travail est d’utiliser l’art comme un outil qui offre des voies d’accès à son essence. Je tiens également à souligner mon intérêt pour le spectateur en tant que participant actif dans mon travail.”
